Abstract

Ameloblastoma is a rare histologic benign tumor which accounts for 1% of all oral tumors and for 9% to 11% of all odontogenic tumors, but locally aggressive tumor with a marked tendency for recurrence. Two therapy strategies are mentioned in literatures: a conservative way of treatment and radical procedures. Conservative surgical procedures like marsupialization, enucleation, and curettage, or just drilling of the perilesional bone are mentioned to be useful in unicystic ameloblastoma, especially in children and young patients. But, many recent reports have warned of high recurrence rates(75~90%) with conservative treatment, compared with recurrence rates of 15~20% after radical surgery. So other authors show high rates of recurrence of ameloblastoma after conservative treatment protocols and therefore recommend radical surgical treatment. However, mandibular resection can also lead to mastication, deglutition, phonation, and esthetic problem and require reconstruction of complex jaw defects. We experienced three patients who had mandibular ameloblastoma treated with radical resection and immediate reconstruction using iliac bone graft, and then implant-supported prosthesis. So, we report cases with a review of the literatures.
